Brian's primary consulting focus with DVC clients includes organizational design, real estate development / project management (including acquisition, non-traditional equity financing, emergency and specialty hospital design, construction management), business finance, business process design, key performance indicators, critical thinking, leadership development, human resources, clinical operations, buisness sale structure / exit strategy and strategic planning.
As president and with a partner in 1991, he opened and operated the Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic, Inc (AAVEC); an after-hours emergency and critical care veterinary practice. As the practice grew, it became a multi-disciplinary referral center with tenant practices in cardiology, surgery, internal medicine, dentistry and ophthamology. The practice provided high quality medicine and client service, skills-based employee performance management systems, pain management, internship programs and was open for emergencies and critical care on a 24/7/365 basis. From 1997-1999, he led a project to acquire land and construct a new free-standing 12,000 square foot hospital, and managed the practice relocation. This project involved a round of non-traditional financing by raising equity capital through a limited investment offering, in addition to the more traditional aspects of veterinary hospital design and construction. Under Brian's leadership, the practice became one of the largest veterinary practices in the United States focusing exclusively on emergency and critical care medicine. In September 2005, he sold his interest in the practice and the associated real estate. At the time of the sale, AAVEC had provided care for more than 100,000 pets and their associated families over 16 years and had gross revenues of greater than $5M and total facility revenues of greater than $10M.
Brian received his B.A. in Zoology from Miami (Ohio) University and his DVM from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to his sixteen years of emergency and critical care practice in Annapolis, Maryland, as a clinical veterinarian, co-founder and owner, Brian's progression through clinical practice included one year in mixed practice in rural Indiana, one year in a two-veterinarian companion animal practice in western Ohio, followed by two years in emergency clinics in Cincinnati, Ohio and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
